"Your .dll [cl_dlls\client.dll] differs from the server

Postby RedIce » Sun Dec 10, 2006 7:18 am

I thought of posting this problem in the 'Projects' section, but seems i can't post there.

I get this message every time i try to connect to a game via PingTool:
Your .dll [cl_dlls\client.dll] differs from the server's.
And i cannot connect to the server.

I have done this, in this order:
Install original half-life, retail, the first that got out on stores.
Install hl1110 patch.
Install cs16b3full_steamless_cs.exe.
Install hl1111 patch, from here.

I have tried the support section, but see nothing that mentions the problem i'm having Sad
Maybe this is a pretty normal thing and i'm just stupid, but i don't understand why it happens...
Am i maybe trying to connect to 1.5 servers with the steamless1.6? If so, how do i differentiate them in PingTool?

I'm using a p4 2.4, 1gig ram, nvidea gforce4 4600, and i used to play 1.5 back in the days too.

It means you have a version mismatch.

It could be a mismatch between Half-Life versions or mod versions. Smart money is on MOD versions--there are very few (if any) 1.6 servers now. You're probably trying to connect to a 1.5 version, which of course gives you an error Smile. I don't actually use ping tool though, so I can't tell you how to tell them apart (unless the server name clearly states CS1.6 or something).

Only 1 difference i noticed between 1.6 and 1.5

1.5 (Game type)= Counterstrike

1.6 (Game type)= Counter-Strike

But theres a lot of difference behind the scenes. Its like steam cs without html, the steam interface and fast downloads.

Question Okay I am going to tear my hair out!!! I have been getting this stupid error message for days. My son is totally into CS Source and I got a new/old computer for christmas and I wanted to go old school. I happend on to your site and thought it would be cool to get back to my roots. I did as the original poster said:

1. HL retail
2. Update 1.1.1.0
3. CS retail
4. Update 1005 full retail
5. Update 1.1.1.1

I still get the .dll message, I have uninstalled and reinstalled in every possible way, but the one that works. I can play HL and TF no problem. I even tried 1.6 beta 3, still the .dll problem. Please help I really don't want to kick my son off of my steam account to play old school. You know the way the net should be.

Waitwaitwaitwaitwait

Half-Life retail and then CS retail?

CS retail is the Half-Life engine without the main Half-Life singleplayer game files, but with the Counter-Strike mod files. Half-Life retail is of course Half-Life with the singleplayer game files.

CS retail should be installed cleanly and patched with 1.0.0.5.
Half-Life should be installed and patched to >=1.1.1.0. After that you should install the mod csv1.5 (and NOT 1.0.0.5). Be careful not to mix them; that's bad.

Laughing Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!

That did the trick!

This is information you should include on your FAQ's for n00bs. After all of these years I knew it would be something that simple. Next question map packs. Do 1.6 maps work with the 1.5 servers? I will look for the answer master!

Thanks again,
